Mystery Woman

Part Six

Major Crimes 11:30 AM

Jim looked at his computer screen. The new mail icon was flashing. Could one of these messages be the one, from Her? Jim hoped so. As he clicked the icon and his new messages were displayed there was one that looked possible. It came from his own e-mail address. There was no subject listed. Jim's estimation of her computer skills increased. She would have to have known or hacked his password to use his account.

Hello Jim,

By now you know of my computer skill. You really should change your password though it was too easy to guess. You should stick to random letters.

OK here are my terms. I'll meet you in the loft, I'll use the white noise generator and masker. I'll also be in disguise. You must have put enough pieces together to know that you will not recognize me. That is the way I want it. If you accept send yourself an e-mail saying so.

Know this if you refuse I stop seeing Blair and I tell him why. He doesn't know what you're doing. I'd like to resolve things now. It will hurt him if he finds out, both of you will fight. I don't want to come between your friendship. It may be wrong to use your friendship with Blair this way, to get you to meet on my terms. Just think of this. If you knew what I looked like and who I was how long would you last before you told Blair? Not long, why do you think I use the blindfold. One look into his blue eyes and if he pulled that lost puppy dog look. Forget it! I'd be a quivering wreak.

Blair has a meeting at the University today and will not be back until late. Be at the loft at four I'll be there at 4:15. You have until 1:00 PM. Why don't you discuss it with Captain Banks.

I hope you agree.

Jim sat back unsure of whether to accept or refuse. She knew what she was doing. If Blair didn't know about Jim's activities, and he refused there would be a big fight or Blair would just move out. That didn't bear thinking about. She was also right that he wouldn't last long if Blair knew the he knew what she looked like. Smart, definitely smart this one. Jim stood up and went to Simon's office taking a printout of the e-mail with him.

"Sir, I've received a response from Blair's Mystery Woman." Jim gave Simon the print out.

"Jim why can't you just drop this? There has been a big improvement in the kid since you told me this started."

"Because, if she hurts him I want to know who to go after. I'd like you to put an unit outside the loft this afternoon to help find out who she. Arrest her when she leaves if necessary."

"Jim am I hearing you correctly. You want to arrest her and bring her in? No I'm drawing the line right here. No more using department resources to track down this woman. I think you should meet with her. She isn't hurting the kid. You wanted to meet her. You can't have it both ways, Jim."

Jim looked at Simon, "Yes, sir." And left the office to send himself an e-mail in the subject line were just two words. I accept.

The Loft 4:14pm

Jim started pacing around she would be here soon. Then Jim started to sneeze, sage. She was using sage to cover her scent. 'Damn, she is clever.' Then there was a knock on the door. Jim got up and answered it. In front of him was the woman. She looked young and old at the same time. She was wearing a wig that much Jim was sure of no one had white hair at her age what ever that was. Jim was willing to guess that she was as old as Blair or a year or two older, not much more. She was wearing tinted contacts, they made her eyes look silver. It must have been the clothes but she looked impossibly thin. She was wearing a gray cotton dress that masked her build. It was impossible to tell her height as well she was wearing high heels Jim could hear them but he really couldn't be sure the dress went down to the floor. She now stood as tall as Blair. If she really wearing make-up it was well applied Jim couldn't tell what was make-up and what was her face. It looked like a porcelain doll's.

She smiled fully aware of his scrutiny, she closed the door, "Shall we sit down." Her voice was soft and had a trace of a British accent. 'She must be using this for me', Jim thought. To make it difficult to trace. Jim couldn't hear anything other than her voice 'Must be the white noise generator.'

"So you're her?"

"Yes I am. I'm not going to hurt him. I would die myself before I would hurt him or allowed anyone else too. Do you believe that?"

"I don't know."

"I make Blair happy, right?"

"Well.............yes, I suppose so, but ....... I still worry about something so secret."

"What is wrong about a little bit of mystery in someone's life?"

"Nothing, but I need to know Blair is all right, and with you I can't be sure."

"Why just because you don't know who I am, and can't 'check me out'."

"That's right, you could be involved with any number of low lives for all I know."

"or I could be someone under your nose."

"That's why I need to know - look this is getting us nowhere-"

"You're right. It isn't"

"What are you going to do with Blair?"

The Woman gave Jim a sidelong look, and a knowing grin, "Well……."

Jim realizing the double meaning to his words turns a little red, "in the long run I mean."

The Woman gave Jim a very earnest look, "I just want to make him happy. In time if he falls in love with someone else I'll go. He has never dated me and if I have my way never will as who I really am."

'Yes!' Jim thinks to himself she's given another clue to who she really is. "That's fine as it stands, but what if you're not telling me the truth, how do I know."

"There are other ways to find truth than listening to a heartbeat. Jim, try trusting _your_ heart."

"My heart has never been my strong point when dealing with women."

"Yes, I know that, what is it telling you now." She looks up at Jim her silver colored eyes soft with the depth of emotion she feels, sadness that Jim cannot trust his own heart to tell him the truth.

Jim, looks into those silver eyes, nearly losing himself in them. "But, I want your assurance that you won't hurt Blair. If you do, no matter how you hide or try to disguise yourself I will find you."

She smiles slightly, "I understand that, Jim. Do you think I expected less? We are back at square one again are we not?"

Jim agrees, "Ok, just as long as we understand each other, Blair is a big boy, I can't stop him from meeting you, but I can worry, just the same."

Jim got up and walked to the kitchen, when he looked back the Mystery Woman is gone he sees a note and goes to read it, it's typed out and said........

Jim,

You are correct Blair is an adult, but you are Blair's protector you didn't take that responsibility lightly. He worries about you as well. You have assurance that I will not hurt him. I hope it is good enough.

Blair will not be back for a while. I've given him a note for an encounter tonight. So don't worry.

Jim looked at the note, 'She obviously prepared this ahead of time. She knows me well enough to know how the conversation would go.'
