Babysitting Blues
"No, Mel please anything but that." Blair pleaded backing away from threat in front of him.
"Blair, please. You and Molly both said I need some closure on this. I'm not going to get another chance at it. I can't do it if they are there."
"Mel, have you asked Molly to do this for you?" Blair asked thinking franticly.
"Yes I have she is busy. Between finals and the summer break everyone is too busy. You're my last hope."
Jim then walked in to Blair's office and did a double take. Here was his partner backed into a corner both figuratively, and literally by a slip of a woman.
"Hello?"
Blair brightened up, "Hey, man what are you doing here?"
"Not much, Chief, who's your friend?"
"So you must be Jim, Blair has told me a little about you." The woman said turning around smiling.
"Well I thought I knew most of Blair's harem but you escape me."
"I'm not surprised. I'm one of the few to escape his charms." She said showing her left hand and the wedding ring on her third finger. "My name is Melissa but all of my friends call me Mel."
"So what were you asking Blair for then? I'm sorry but I couldn't help but overhear."
"Well I've got a bit of a family crisis and need a babysitter for my two kids. Blair has babysat for them before and he's a little reluctant to repeat the experience."
"Why can't you take them with you or have your husband watch them for you."
"Normally Ian would but he is in Europe visiting his parents the kids and I are going out there in two weeks to join him, and I don't want to expose my kids to the poisonous atmosphere that my brothers and sisters will be dishing out over my dad. You see he is dying and I need to talk to him about a few things and I'm the closest to him in terms of distance. So I'll get about five hours head start on any talking. As it stands I'm the strongest one in terms of emotion, I came to terms with him dying when he had his first heart problem. So as cold as this sounds this is no news to me. I'm also the second youngest so they expect me to be very emotional, I'll definitely surprise them on that score."
Jim looked at her and saw a grim look deep in her eyes. "You know you're right that is a cold attitude to have with your father dying in hospital."
"Yes I know it is, but you add the emotional and verbal abuse he dished out over my lifetime and add physical to that mix, the fact that my mother left him four times and went back each and every time, say that she went back because of me and my sister you can see why I'm a bit cold."
Jim looked from Mel to Blair. Blair's face was a mask of pain and hurt but whether it was because of Mel or because of some past pain Jim didn't know.
"So Chief, exactly how much trouble are these two kids?" Jim asked thinking Blair was stretching the truth a bit, kids normally liked Blair.
"Jim, remember that night in November when I came home exhausted? I was watching Mel's kids that night."
"Wait a minute, I though you just had a wild night with a date then. How old are they?"
Mel spoke up then, "Well Sean is five and CJ is four, but Blair is right they do have a lot of energy.
